As I was pondering what to master for my next skill on the homestead, I came across several blogs and videos where other homesteaders were making their own vanilla extract. I had no idea that vanilla extract was so easy to make, and right at home too! I've been trying to expand my homesteading skills by learning to make more things from scratch. I may have said this before about a new recipe, but I really mean it this time - this is, by far, THE easiest homemade thing to make!
You will need 3 ingredients - that's it!
I added some links at the bottom of this post, so you can see exactly what I used.
Vodka
Vanilla Beans - Grade B
Glass Bottles
First, wash out the glass bottles (or you could just use a good ole' mason jar). Pour the Vodka into the bottles and fill within an inch of the top. Next, get the vanilla beans and cut in half length-wise. Then split those halves open to expose all of that gooey goodness from the inside! You will add 6 - 8 cut pieces of vanilla bean to each bottle. Place the top on the bottle and that is IT!
Store bottles away from any windows and shake them occasionally. The vanilla extract will be ready to use in about 8 - 12 weeks. The best thing about this is, if you run out, you can just add more Vodka into the bottle and simply wait again! The vanilla beans can be used multiple times. When purchasing the vanilla beans, make sure to order grade B and also understand that you will have PLENTY to make some vanilla extract for your friends. They will love it, trust me!
